Walking is the #1 Excercise
July 24th, 2008 by adminFor people over 50 walking is the best way to start to excercise. But walking isn’t just a way to start out excercising it is a great low impact way to maintain weight and heart health.
The only person who probably wouldn’t really benefit from walking would be someone who was already very fit. For someone who doesn’t exercise that much, a half hour walking program every day would soon see results in breathing, slower heartbeat to name but a few. Walking fast can be quite tiring though so it is a good idea to take a break or slow down every so often to relax the muscles and joints.
Try walking in different settings, alternating walking with dance on different days, and of course including a partner can be much more interesting than going at it alone. Walking is also used in gymnasiums on a treadmill as a static exercise along with cycling and rowing.
People looking to lose weight can also find walking a great way to do this without having the expense of joining a gym or expensive clothing and it is something that almost everyone can do naturally. Of course if you can combine your walking with another activity where other aspects of fitness can be achieved then you will benefit even more.
Two other benefits of walking are the cost, if you don’t have a great budget (but do get a good set of walking boots or similar,) and the fact that it is considered a low impact activity do should not damage the joints. In fact the American Heart Association recommends that you should start by walking for only five minutes per day if you haven’t been exercising for a while, gradually building to that 30 minutes per day mentioned earlier.
If you want to improve your general health and keep fit, or if you want to reduce your weight, walking is a good place to start and has a multitude of health benefits for everyone. For those individuals who have a few dollars to spend then perhaps a treadmill is a good idea as it can give different levels of difficulty and will probably improve your fitness levels faster.
Of all the fitness equipment available, the treadmill is still the most commonly purchased piece of home keep fit apparatus. Because the belt is motorized and not regulated by your own walking pace it allows for a huge degree of versatility whereby the speed and difficulty can be adjusted and the use of pre-set programs can increase your fat burning or improve your cardiovascular health.
The heart of your exercise treadmill is its motor and it is this plus the treadmill’s ramp size that are the most important aspects to look for. The treadmill works for a lot of people who like to work out in the privacy of their own home.
Some people like the fact that they just spend an odd ten minutes here or there on it whenever it suits them but however you carry out your walking exercise it doesn’t matter just as long as you do.
